6 year old missing a permanent tooth (bottom front)?

At my sons last dental check the dentist said that my son would not get one of his permanent lower front teeth. He said this is rare, especially on the bottom. Once he starts losing his teeth he will need a partial to keep the space open until he is old enough for an implant (the doc said age 18). Does anyone have more information on this?

It does happen. My daugther was born without widsom teeth. It does happen but with the way the dentist can perform magic he will be fine.
Reply:Yes, and you'll just have to have an implant when he's older...no problem. This is actually a birth defect and how lucky it's this one not something worse. My son did not have a front tooth after loosing his baby one and the dentist told me the same thing. I so welcome this rather than any other horrific thing that could have happened. I told my son when you're over23 and want to have this done I will pay for it....it's a very small problem.
Reply:my cousin had one done when she was eighteen and her younger brother had 3... it's some kind of genetic thing, their father also was missing permanent teeth. it is rare to have it happen on the bottom and your son will most likely have to wear a retainer with a false tooth until he is old enough for an implant. the procedure was painful for my cousins, but their teeth both look great now!

Reply:Hypodontia and Oligodontia. Hey very interesting. I suppose with dental technology he will be able to simply get crowns and at least he can be guareteed of having a nice smile always.

I know alot of university do studies on these rare conditions.
Reply:it may interest you to know that after braces nobody can really tell he was ever missing a lower front tooth. Sometimes these are extracted on purpose.
Reply:I have that problem too. Except I'm missing a top tooth. Right now i have braces so I have a fake tooth attached to my wire. It looks completly natural, but i can wiggle it and it was annoying at first. No one can tell its there, and when i get my braces off i will have a tooth attached to my retainer. I suppose your son will have the same thing. When your son stops growing he will have an implant put into his gum. It will look and feel like a normal tooth. Its really not a hard problem to have.
