I have been wearing a retainer since 11th grade. I am now 20 years old and continue wearing one because I am missing two teeth in the front (very noticeable when my retainer is out).
My retainer has artificial teeth so as to mask the missing teeth. They look great other than the fact the giant bar all along my top front teeth makes me look like a complete dork.
I don't want to get implants even though my dentists urge me to do it. Anybody know an alternative? Like if invisaline or something makes invisible retainers with custom artificial teeth? Or what about coloring the bar on my retainer to make it simply camoflouge into my teeth?
Are there any alternatives to a mouth retainer after braces?
I'm assuming that your retainer was made to keep the spaces open in order for you to get implants or bridges someday? You have several options to fill the spaces. Implants are the best option, but also the most expensive. Fixed bridges, a partial denture, or a flipper would be other options. I'll leave it up to you to research these options, but it sounds like you're looking for a quick, inexpensive fix for now. If I were you, I would opt for a flipper. It is somewhat like your retainer in that it will have the acrylic that goes across your palate and also custom teeth, but no wire. It will keep the spaces open so that if you decide in the future to do implants, you could. I would continue to wear the retainer you have right now at night to keep your teeth straight, though. If your dentist isn't willing to do a flipper but instead urges you to do the implants or a bridge instead, I would get a second opinion. Implants and bridges are a more permanent fix, but a flipper will at least keep the spaces open so you could do one of the other options in the future if you choose to do so. The cost of a flipper will differ from dentist to dentist, but a good ballpark guess would be around $300-$400. Be sure to do some checking around!
