I've had white spots on just my front two teeth since I was a teenager and I've never been able to get rid of them. I brush twice a day with a good toothpaste and I've never lived anywhere there was heavy flouride in the water. It has come and gone over the years. It varies from almost negligible to looking like someone colored my teeth with whiteout. I've recently stopped drinking soda and the spots have faded to the point where I can smile without being self conscious. I asked my dentist and she thinks that maybe it was caused by mother taking antibiotics while she was pregnant with me (which she did). It still didn't answer my question as to what it was or what I could do about it.
I've tried whitening rinses like Listerine and Hydrogen Peroxide, but it didn't seem to do much.
I'm okay with giving up soda, but it is starting to wear on me. I miss it!!
Any suggestions as to it's cause and what can be done.
White spots or stains on my teeth?
i have white spots too on my teeth and i was told it was a calcium deficiency. i have heard it can be caused from the antibiotics at birth too. my dentist told me to use the teeth whitening strips so i tried them. they didnt completely eliminate the spots but they made them alot less noticable. maybe that would help =)
Reply:antibiotics in pregnancy can stain teeth but so can too much fluoride
Reply:its from flouride in the water when you were a kid.
A lot of municipalities add flouride to the water supply - a practice that is not without its controversy.. and 'heavy' amounts of flouride would actually kill you - they add only about 0.7 and 1.2 ppm. Currently 66% of United States residents on public water supplies have fluoridated water... 42 of the 50 largest U.S. cities have water fluoridation.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluor...
the term is called dental fluorosis

- check the picture, look familiar?
my wife had them - as far as I know the only solution is cosmetic veneers - the stains are "in" your teeth.
the good news is that it is strictly cosmetic, not effecting your tooth's structure or integrity.
Reply:I have been a dental assistant for 15 years. I would recommend the zoom whitening procedure. It will bleach out the other areas so they will appear whiter and will blend in better with the white spots. Right after you bleach the white spots will be more pronounced, but will rehydrate after a day or so and you will have all over whiter teeth. If your not satisfied with the result, the only other option is to place veneers on the front of the teeth. However, when you have veneers they remove the enamel off the front of the teeth and that tooth surface is gone forever so oral hygiene will be very important(brushing, flossing, routine dental check ups). You will also need to go to a well qualified cosmetic dentist because is have seen some very ugly veneers. Ask for pictures of the cosmetic work the DDS has done. If your not impressed, go somewhere else. My office charges $700.00 for the zoom, but brite smiles runs specials for $500.00. Good luck
Reply:I have been a dental assistant for about 8 years. I have the same thing on my upper front tooth. I just noticed it in my 20s. There is really no good way to take it away, it is an over-concentration of calcium in one area. I use dental office bleaching to whiten my teeth, and sometimes that can actually make these spots more pronounced. I disagree with the girl that recommended ZOOM. It is over priced in my opinion. You can get great results with less damage and sensitivity with trays and do it yourself in the comfort of your own home. I also feel that the ZOOM will probably make the spots more pronounced. Yes, it will whiten areas around the spots, but it can also whiten the spots in some cases. Some people actually get more chalky looking white spots FROM bleaching there teeth. The only real way to take the spot away is to get a veneer over the front of the tooth. It is a little excessive, but it depends how bad it bothers you. There are some types of veneers called "no prep" veneers being used now which means they do not have to remove any tooth structure to place them. It is basically porcelain glued to the front of the tooth. You're giving up soda for what? The soda wouldn't cause the white spots. It of course causes decay, but not white spots. Drink away! We need to have something to look forward to right. I can't kick that habit myself. I feel your pain. Good luck, don't let it bother you too much. It is very common, I know from looking in lots of mouths every day.
Reply:I also have them on my front teeth. I got them around 18, after taking off braces. With time, it did fade a little but it's still there. My dentist said something whitening can help BUT sometimes it can do the oppistie and make it more noticeable. Instead of spending so much, I just got like a $25 box of crest white strips. It did help a little but not totally gone. What happens is that it whiten all my teeth and made the spots slightly lighter. But as my teeth started to get dirty again, for some reason, it didn't look as noticeable. Another option is to get veneers or lumineers from ur dentist. Ppl say they don't notice it on my teeth but I do but I just leave it and hope it fades more. Good luck!
