Can you go after mechanics for fraud?

We're rebuilding our engine for our 85 Ranger at the mechanics, and we requested them to take a look at our starter, because it's been giving us trouble. The company called today saying that we need a new starter because some of the teeth are missing. The last time we checked, the starter was NOT missing teeth, the only thing wrong was some of the bolts were loose. They are going to charge us double (maybe another 600 dollars) for parts plus labor to get it fixed. If we requested to see the part and it's not damaged, can we go after them for fraud or demand that we don't pay for repairing the starter? Any feedback would be appreciated, THANKS!! :-)

i don't know what state you are in but in California you would contact B.A.R.(Bureau Automotive Repair)fill a complaint form(they will need a copy of your invoice, what was said, what you were quoted,)these people can shut shops down and take their repair license if they are found guilty of fraudulent practices,or contact Better Business Bureau.
Reply:$600 for a starter! Is it like gold plated? With the engine out swapping a starter should take about 10 minutes and cost less then $100.

but...

if it is shot.. then maybe it screwed your flywheel ? THAT would run up the bill.

You need to go look at it and do that now. If they are jacking you off on the starter, think of what they are doing to you with the engine. But if they are handling the matter right you will have more confidence in them.

.
Reply:Don't jump to conclusions until you know all the facts.
Reply:well if the starter bolts were lose then it would let it slip and jump around and not mesh right and cause broken teeth on the starter and flywheel and replaing the fly whell involves some serious labor if the motor is back in the car but the real culpret is the lose starter bolts and who left them lose
Reply:Is it just the starter,or flywheel and starter for $ 600. Try another shop and don't tell them what going on, and see if you get the same answer.
