My 16 month old cat, BJ was adopted with her two sisters at a week old of birth from a friend of mine. We bottle fed them until they were well. They were strays and their parents were feral in an apartment complex with many other stray cats around. Well, when they all lost their baby teeth, everything was fine. They grew back in both the sisters but BJ never got her top canines. We thought at first she was a late bloomer... but it never occured. I just checked now and still nothing. lol.
My friend I got her from said that BJ's parents were cousins, (which seems plausible) . I have reason to believe she is inbred... but otherwise, aside from being slower than the other two, she appears fine.
Does the slowness and teeth have anything to do with eachother... and has anyone else had this expeience?
Again; 16 month old cat is missing her top canines.
My 16 month old cat is missing her top canines... they never came in, know what is wrong?
It is not at all uncommon for cats to not grow in one or more canine teeth. I was told by my vet that they have lost the need for them through the domestication process. This is also why many cats do not have the little front teeth as well. I have had cats born with one less then they were suppose to have and I have also had to have 3 canine teeth pulled on one cat. He was totally fine, but I had it done when he was young due to a very bad bite. I was also told by the specialist that it is always better and easier to have the teeth pulled when they are young as it is less painful and causes fewer complications.
Reply:My kitten is almost 6 months and already has her adult canines so I would say that it is pretty likely they aren't coming in. If she is eating ok and doesn't seem to be in any kind of discomfort I would think she is just fine.
Reply:She should have got them in about a year ago. I would have a vet check her out. They may be impacted and causing her pain.
