Dog Experts - Why does my mature puppy teeth on his arm?

Let me stop all the 13 year olds who are answering this for points- He's fed and incredibly well taken care of, but thanks.

Anyway, he had something to teeth on, and he's got all his new teeth (11 mos) but he gently knaws on the same one every once in a while. Am I missing something?

If it's every one in a while - meaning a couple times a week - he likely has an itch. You can try a bit of conditioning spray in case he has dry skin. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry much.

If he does this daily, he could have an allergy or parasite. Speak to the vet.

If you notice he does this in certain situations - a siren just went off or he just had a barking match with the dog down the street, for instance - this could be a stress-reliever. Either avoid situations that lead to his stress, teach him to enjoy the situation rather than be stressed by it, or use a DAP collar to help relax him.
Reply:some times dogs with a nervous habbit will chew on thier paws or legs as well as other items, more so when they are stressed
Reply:My puppy did the same thing, but he grew out of it. Truthfully, they can be just playing. THE SPOT CAN BE ITCHY. If you said it's every once in a while it shouldn't be a problem. Next time you notice this, try distracting him with one of his favorite toys instead or buy him some GREENIES (ask at the pet store my dog loves them). He'll learn to focus on playing with something else other than his arm! Hope this helps!
Reply:Sometimes there are dies in foods and treats that cause dogs and cats to have a certain reaction to the dyes and they have the feeling to gnaw on there paws and legs. Also, when they go outside, sometimes they can get a cut or sliver on the paws and/or legs that would cause them to try to get it out.

Check those things..................good luck
Reply:As you might now know, there are numerous reasons for this action, but the trick is, not let it become a habit or if it has, to break it.

A simple and safe trick is to take Listerine mouth wash in a spray bottle and spray it on the spots that he chews.

Don't spray any near is face or if he has any open scratches or cuts because it will sting like crazy.

Dogs like people usually don't like the taste and it will encourage him not to chew.

P.S Make sure he has several chew toys available.

Good luck
Reply:My mom's dog would chew on his paws and we asked the vet and it turned out he had allergies. He is on medication now and we had to switch his dog food. You may want to take him to vet to rule out a medical problem.
